Amenities and Services Found in Neighbouring Communities

All SouthNest condos and villas are situated in the province of the Yucatan, along the Flamingo coast, which lines the Gulf of Mexico. The accommodations are nestled between the quaint fishing port town of Progreso along the village of Chicxulub and the Uaymitun coastal area. A mere 45 minutes away is the large modern city of Merida, which has retained a colonial atmosphere full of romanticism, culture and history.

MERIDA

Population: 1-million - 35km from Progreso

  • Various shopping plazas such as Sears, Sams and Costco.
  • Modern supermarkets such as Carrefour, and many elaborate shopping centres.
  • Large outdoor craft market and a multitude of quaint boutiques, Internet cafés, and a wide variety of fast-food restaurants and international quality restaurants.
  • Major banks, money exchange bureaus and ATM machines.
  • Modern and low-cost dentistry and medical services available in English.
  • 18 hole golf course (20 km from Progreso)
  • 12 large modern movie cinemas.
  • Buses leaving to many destinations including Cancun, which is only 4-hours (320 km) away. The cost is $22.00 (Cdn) and the bus leaves every 2 hours.
  • Buses from Progreso to Merida leave every 10 minutes between 6 AM and 9 PM at a cost of $1.30 (Cdn.) Buses leave from Chixchulub for Merida hourly.
  • Large international airport in Merida, 45 minutes from Progreso.

PROGRESO

Population: 40-thousand - 6km from Chicxulub

  • One average sized supermarket, with most North American amenities. 
  • An outdoor market selling fruits, vegetables, fish and meat and featuring varying boutiques and fresh flower stands. 
  • Two movie theatres, cultural and festival events at the town square and cultural centre. 
  • Pharmacies, bakeries, post office, hair salons, liquor stores, video stores, Internet cafés, boutiques and dozens of restaurants along the Malecon (the beach board walk.)
  • Several laundry and dry cleaning outlets. Drop off and pick up 24 hours later.
  • Main banks, ATM machines, and money exchange bureaus.
  • Satellite dish companies offering Spanish and English movie channels including CNN.
  • Cellular phone services available. Bring your cell phone and have it reprogrammed.
  • English speaking doctors and American- style hospital services.
  • Buses to Merida / Progreso are $1.30, Chicxulub / Progreso are $0.30. They run from 6 AM to 9 PM.
  • Card game club, social events located between Progreso and Chicxulub

CHICXULUB

Population: 6-thousand

  • Outdoor market selling fruits, vegetables and fish
  • Pharmacies, bakeries, post office, hair salon, liquor stores, Internet cafés, seafood restaurants, video store.
  • Local laundry - drop off and pick up in 24 hours.
  • Buses and mini buses travel to Progreso continuously between 6 AM and 9:30 PM. Mini buses travel to Uaymitun every 20 minutes and cost $0.30.
  • Fresh fish can be purchased directly from the fishermen along the beach from Progreso to Uaymitun. Filleted fish goes for approximately $6.00 (Cdn) per kilo!
  • Events are held at the community centre and town square specifically for Canadians, such as folklore dances, concerts, and local craft sales.
  • English speaking doctor.
